How Scented Candles Affect Our Bodies?


We have a well-managed process of smell in our body.  Olfactory cells are very significant in the process of smelling. Olfactory cells are located in the nose. Olfactory cells, when they smell, are stimulated by the smell of anything. After being stimulated by the smell, olfactory cells send messages or information to the brain where a smell is recognized by the brain (to which this smell belongs). Hence, olfactory cells which are located in the nose are very significant in the nose. When the brain receives information regarding smell, then the brain identifies and distinguishes the smell from multiple smells.


Every organ or part of our body is very important on its side. Nose is very significant in respect of smell. The process of smell begins from the nose. Smell begins at the back of the nose, where millions of sensory neurons lie in a strip of tissue called the olfactory epithelium. Sensory neurons which are located on the back of the nose play a very important role in the process of smell or odour`The tips of these cells contain proteins called receptors that bind odour molecules. The receptors are like locks and the keys to open these locks are the fragrance molecules that float past, explains Leslie Vosshall, a scientist who studies olfaction at Rockefeller University. 

Olfactory bulb

 A rounded mass of tissue that contains several types of nerve cells that are involved in the sense of smell. The olfactory bulbs receive information about smells from the nose and send it to the brain by way of the olfactory tracts.

You’ve probably experienced that a scent can also invoke our emotions and even specific memories, like when a whiff of cologne at a department store reminds you of your favourite uncle who wears the same scent. The information of smell is sent by thalamus  to the hippocampus and amygdala, these are the key parts of the brain region which are concerned with smell and memory.


The information regarding smell also goes to the thalamus, a structure that serves as a relay station for all of the sensory information coming into the brain. … This happens because the thalamus sends smell information to the hippocampus and amygdala, these are the key parts of the brain region which are concerned with smell and memory.


The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a prefrontal cortex region in the frontal lobes of the brain which is involved in the cognitive process of decision-making. In non-human primates it consists of the association cortex areas Brodmann area 11, 12 and 13; in humans it consists of Brodmann area 10, 11 and 47.
